“O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”- Psalm 63:1
When my husband played football back in high school, he suffered severe heat exhaustion during one of the practices. At that time, drinking water during practice was considered a sign of weakness by most coaches, and because of that he ended up at the hospital! And even this year, my 13-year-old almost passed out at practice. He had been lethargic and weak for several days, even with eating a lot and drinking water- but apparently it wasn’t enough. After the incident, we went to the doctor who was concerned enough to send him to get an EKG to rule out heart issues. The result? Severe dehydration. The amount he’d been drinking seemed to be enough, but his need was greater.
For me, it is easy to do this spiritually- I don’t fully understand my great need for Jesus, the Living Water. If I did, I would do more than sip on Sunday and read His Word at my convenience. I would drink deep of Him and not try to fill my thirst with other things- because when I do, I am actually dying of thirst and living a weak, lethargic life! I truly pray for Him to show me my great need- daily- and give me an overwhelming thirst for Him.
Just a few questions for consideration:
1. What things do you run to when you are “dry” and need to be filled?
2. How could other coaches’ wives be an encouragement to you during these times?
3. Do you experience the “desert” during the sports season and can you remember a time when Jesus met your need for Him- the “Living Water”?
Let this be our heart…
Psalm 42:1-2 “As the deer pants for flowing streams so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God…”
Let us run to Him…
Rev. 22:17 “And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.”
Thank you Jesus, for the gift of knowing You. Please protect us from spiritual dehydration, and help us to run to you with our thirst, desires and needs. You are the only One who can satisfy and You so desire to do so- thank you!! We love you! Amen!
