I met my husband after college so I never got to see him play college football. All of our coaches have at one time been athletes. I don’t know how it is for you, but my husband tells the kids and me stories of the “glory days,” and the highs and lows of his experiences as an athlete. If he never shared these things with us, we would be missing out on a core part of who he is and how he lives now.
Parents need to tell their stories. In the Bible, the Old Testament book of Joshua records Joshua, leader of the Israelite people, saying, “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.”
-Joshua 24:15.
Then in the next book of the Bible (Judges), we read about war, idols, and murder, and we have to ask what happened. The Bible tells us that one of the main causes of this fall was that the Israelite parents DID NOT tell the true stories of God to their children. “The people served God all the days of Joshua. and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work that the Lord had done for Israel. And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died old and full of years. And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers, and there arose another generation after them who did not know that Lord or the work that He had done for Israel. And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals (idols) and they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, and from among the gods of the people who were around them, and they bowed down to them. And they provoked the Lord to anger.” -Judges 2:7,8 & 10-12
I don’t know about you but I do not want to provoke the anger of the Lord. More than that, I do not want to break His heart by loving and serving anyone or anything above Him. Ladies, we have to tell these stories of God’s holiness and love to our children. We need to proclaim these stories to each other, our husbands, and our extended families. I recently read that when we DON’T talk about God, we are still communicating- we are SAYING with our SILENCE that these true stories don’t matter. That the Lord isn’t important enough to talk about. What a convicting statement! Even though people rarely say this to women, let me say: Ladies, we need to talk MORE! And instead of ONLY talking about the glory days of sports, let’s talk about the Glorious One, and through His stories, I’m praying that the Lord will call many generations to Himself!
